Afrobeat Pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti to Receive Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary Nigerian musician and activist, is set to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026, making him the first African artist to receive this honour. He’ll be recognized alongside other music icons like Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, and Paul Simon for his creative contributions to recorded music.

Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat is a blend of funk, jazz, salsa, and traditional Nigerian rhythms, creating a unique music genre that has inspired global stars like Beyoncé, Wizkid, and Burna Boy. His lyrics often criticised corruption and oppression, making him a voice for the voiceless.

This award is a testament to Fela’s enduring legacy, and his family, including sons Femi and Seun Kuti, are proud of the recognition. Femi Kuti said, “Our father’s legacy lives on. We are honoured to accept this Grammy Hall of Fame award on behalf of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.”
