Ganusi has been trending on Nigerian TikTok for almost a week. It follows the online outrage involving some members of the Muslim community in Nigeria who are demanding apologies from the famed musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM I) following his infamous comment on the demeanour of some Muslim clerics called “Alufa” at the funeral reception held in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state in honour of the musician’s late mother.
In a now viral video, the musician was recorded saying in Yoruba that the clerics refused to stay at his father’s house in Fidipote for refreshments but chose to be at a reception set aside for special guests using the Yoruba expression “Ganusi” meaning “leave mouth ajar” which is deemed by many as a derogatory way of describing the situation.
The video has since gone viral, triggering a series of memes for TikTokers. Many Muslims clerics online have condemned the musician’s remarks and have demanded an apology from him. Still, KWAM I’s fans online have defended his comment, adding that many clerics need to show restraints in matters of the flesh.
The term “Ganusi” has been lampooned by many social media buffs including controversial singer Portable who has composed a song using the expression. KWAM I has also jumped on the trend with a live performance using the expression “Ganusi.”
