Six Facts about Africa’s Green Economy

Africa’s green economy is replete with massive opportunities, including renewable energy, critical minerals, and green jobs. The black continent has many opportunities, including renewable energy, critical minerals, and green jobs.

Indeed, Africa has abundant resources for solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and geothermal energy. Sadly, the continent’s ocean energy is largely untapped, and could possibly generate 100–400% of the world’s current energy demand.

Here are six facts about Africa’s green economy:

  • Job creation
A report by FSD Africa and Shortlist estimates that Africa could create up to 3.3 million green economy jobs by 2030. The report identifies five key sectors for job creation, including energy and electricity, manufacturing and materials, and agriculture and nature.

    •
  • GDP growth
A UNEP study suggests that Africa could become a leader in renewable energy solutions, which could increase the continent’s GDP by 6.4% from 2021 to 2050.

  • Ocean renewable energy
Africa has a vast untapped resource in ocean renewable energy, which could generate 100–400% of the world’s current energy demand.

  • Alliance for Green Infrastructure (AGIA)
The African Development Bank, African Union Commission, and Africa50 created the AGIA to accelerate Africa’s transition to Net-Zero.

  • Barriers to climate action
Experts say that African countries need bold interventions to break barriers that prevent them from accessing funds for climate action.

  • Fair transition
Experts say that parties to the COP29 United Nations Climate Change Conference should recognize that a fair transition should include equitable and sustainable energy practices for all countries.
