Six Ways to Tackle Depression

The recent news of the death of the 31-year old former lead singer of the British pop band, One Direction, Liam Payne has sparked conversations about the agony of living with depression. Whether mild or severe, depression is a mental health illness that should be taken seriously. Before seeking help from professionals, there are signs that indicate that one is depressed.

One is an overwhelming feeling of sadness. This can be caused by a feeling of rejection, loss of employment or income, inability to meet up to societal expectations, declining health, broken marriage or relationship, loss of a loved one, betrayal or something else. Sometimes, people don’t even know why they feel so sad even when it seems like they have it all.

Another sign is a change in appetite. A depressed person might eat less or eat more than usual. If you notice that a friend or a loved one has lost or gained weight considerably, you may offer support in terms of socialising or talk therapy. Disruption in sleep patterns may also be an indication that one is depressed. You can talk to a doctor about the sleep troubles.

Loss of interest in things that used to be enjoyable is a big warning sign for depression. For instance, you might slow down at your job or abandon a pastime that once made you happy. Also, when you find it really hard to concentrate or you cry at random, it may be a sign that you’re depressed. A mild depression that is not treated can become severe in the long run leading up to self-destructive behaviour like addiction or self-mutilation or even suicidal thoughts.

Many who have overcome depression and are finding joy in their lives have revealed some practical ways of managing the condition.

Here are six suggested ways of tackling depression:

Trying New Things

It’s possible that your life is becoming boring because you tend to do the same things over and over. Endeavour to learn a new language or craft, try new recipes, visit new places, read new books, watch new films, play new games, navigate new apps, join a tour group and update your playlist.

Exercise

Get your sports shoes and get moving. Even when you feel down, a combination of fresh air, great playlist, discharge of endorphins during walks or sprints can lift your spirit. Set your own record. Don’t try to compete with others. Just let positive thoughts run through your veins.

Resist Peer Pressure

Sometimes, some people may remind you of what you need to be doing at different stages in your life. While this may seem like a good gesture, you are the architect of your life and have a better view of personal circumstances and resources. Unless someone is offering you practical assistance on your life goals, resist the pressure of living up to societal expectations. Design your own life. Be your own life’s project manager.

Work-Life Balance

This is one of the most underrated elements involved in living a good life. With the high inflation in most parts of the world, many households are struggling to survive. The pressure is on a family head, single parent and singles without support to work more than the recommended hours. While some organisations operate the traditional nine-to-five, many workers in essential services work longer hours including weekends and holidays. Can you remember the last time you took a week off without responding to mails, writing or delivering on a project? Burnout is a slippery way to fall into depression. Take some time off.

Talk to Someone

Some people find it comforting to speak to someone about their struggle with depression. You can make telephone calls, send voice notes or speak to a stranger if you feel you need some sort of anonymity. If you are battling suicidal thoughts, speak to a specialist in mental health and follow all the recommendations given, no matter how ordinary they may sound.

Cultivate Healthy Relationships

You may not necessarily have a big pool of friends but you can build healthy relationships with others. Seek ways of helping people out. This makes you less self-absorbed.
