Six years after its initial debut in Lagos at the Lagos Theatre Festival, the experential drama titled ‘Esther’s Revenge’ is on tour in the USA.
The award-winning play which had been featured at the Lagos Fringe and Abuja Fringe before making two tours to the Vrystaat Arts Festival and the Pan African Creative Exchange in South Africa also had a wonderful showcase at the Brighton Fringe.
Esther’s Revenge is the recipient of Soho Playhouse New York International Encore Series Award at the Brighton Fringe in the past year.
This January, New Yorkers will have a taste of Esther’s Revenge based on a crime of passion written and directed by the critically acclaimed director, Kenneth Uphopho starring Bola Stephen-Atitebi.
Produced by Tope Sanni for Paw Studios Africa, ‘Esther’s Revenge’ is an experiential play inspired by events that led to a widely reported murder in 1953. The 22-year old Esther is a Nigerian who killed her white lover, Mark Hall, a British railway worker, after finding out that Mark had married a British wife. Not only that, Mark had borrowed £400 from Esther to procure a taxi for his new wife. Esther became enraged at the news that she grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed Mark.
The play, which kicked off on January 6th, runs till January 19th.
