The air is dry and dusty. Early in the morning, it’s cold. By midday, its soothing air with a little warmth from the sun. Wet clothes and shoes get dry quickly during this period. Painters love this weather. It’s called Harmattan- this gentle breeze from the Sahara desert.
While Harmattan may be many people’s desired weather in Africa, Harmattan can be torturous for persons with pre-existing health conditions like cardiovascular and lung diseases.
Whatever it is, there are certain DOS and DON’TS for the sake of the green culture that you must know to enjoy this beloved season.
Dos
- Wet.Wet.Wet
Sounds like the name of a rock band, right? True but this time, it’s about your plants. All plants including decorative grasses need to be hydrated during Harmattan. Since Harmattan marks the end of the rainy season for the year, do not expect drizzle on your flowers except from your neighbours’ leaking pipe. Lol. On a serious note, cultivate the habit of sprinkling water or invest in automated sprinklers to keep your garden green and beautiful.
- Douse the Dust
If you live or work in an environment where there are untarred roads, you need to throw some water around to reduce the dust that you’d inhale.
- Hello Humidifier
Wondering why you need to make friends with a humidifier? It is known to improve breathing and creates a comfortable atmosphere, which helps people sleep better at night. A humidifier prevents and reduces the intensity of congestion and dry skin.
- Wipe Surfaces
Keep all surfaces clean: table tops, dashboard, car, shoes, bags and if you are bespectacled, keep your lenses clean to prevent eye infections.
Don’ts
-
- Do not sweep dusty ground without wetting it first.
- Do not leave your garden without anyone to tend it for you.
- Do not run out of water. Whether for drinking or washing, water is very essential during Harmattan.
