Tankwa Artscape Residency and Other Opportunities for Artists and Writers in 2024

It is official. The Tankwa Artscape Residency, founded in 2017 is now open to the public. This residency is an annual FREE artist residency for 10-12 national and international artists in the Tankwa Karoo, South Africa which hold in April.

The two-week residency targets artists working in the fields of visual art, spoken word / sound, movement art, performance art. It is a unique experience in the desert for the most part using found materials or/and body and vocal performance, diving extremely deep into the creative sources. Only few artworks are permanent. Applications for permanent artworks go through an additional selection process. Much is ephemeral or performance based, and some of the work involves the gathering of experiences / ideas / possibilities that will translate into artworks at a later stage.

With eyes on emerging artists and art students, this residency is an opportunity to connect South African artists with international artists as well as art organisations. For previous participants, Tankwa Artscape Residency was a turning point in their career.

The conceptual focus is on interacting creatively with the vast environment of the Tankwa Karoo and the history, ecology and culture of the place. Tankwa Artscape aims at providing a space for conscious confrontation of the artist with harsh, relatively unspoiled nature. Each artist then deals with this confrontation in an individual creative way, giving rise to artworks that render this confrontation visible, audible, touchable.

Documentation is through video, photography and audio podcasts. We provide a group of photographers / videographers to document artworks and artistic processes.

Selected artists stay in safari tents in the deserts with comfortable beds. There are hot showers and flush toilets.

Diverse artists such as land and nature artists, installation, performance artists meet at the venue that is powered by solar. Travel costs are borne by selected artists or their institutions of origin.

Towards the end of the residency, artists do walkabouts with invited gallerists/curators/journalists to present work.

Banff Writers’ Residency, Canada

Banff Centre’s Summer Writers residency will provide writers space for the creative exploration of their writing practice. This self-directed residency offers the opportunity to work away from the constraints of everyday life.

The programme provides optional opportunities for consultations with mentors, public readings, and group sessions led by guest mentors that allow creators to explore techniques, aspects, and devices that are beneficial to practice.

This 12-day self-directed residency provides teaching from faculty members and professional guests, Q&A sessions, public events, and one-on-one workshopping. Mentors will discuss ideas, experiences, and obstacles that participants may be encountering with their writing.

This residency is a self-directed program that offers time and space for writers to focus, reconnect, and re-energize their writing practice. In addition to a single room, and a small private studio, you will be surrounded by a community of artistic peers.

As a flexible self-guided program, the Summer Writers residency allows selected participants to choose the amount of support you are looking for. All programme elements are optional.
