  • Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo Visits DJ Splash, A Former Marlian Records Signee

  • Police yet to apprehend key suspects

Today is exactly one week since it was announced that the street pop artist, Mohbad died in Lagos. The shocking news stirred up curiosity and outrage because of the circumstances that preceded his demise. Mohbad born Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba was a rapper, singer and songwriter who was signed by the Marlian Records. But after quitting the label in 2022, he allegedly became the target of physical assaults. arrests and torture.

His mother who recently spoke out on the internet revealed that her son had lived all his life in death. She claimed that her son knew no peace ever since he began associating with the said record label. Several videos showing Mohbad in agony had flooded social media, igniting more outrage among celebrities and concerned citizens.

The call for Naira Marley’s music to be banned had also increased with Splash FM Ibadan leading the movement to mute the music produced by this controversial label. Celebrities such as Samklef, Zlatan, Bella Schmurda, Daddy Showkey, Daddy Freeze, Iyabo Ojo amongst others have been very vocal about their demand for justice for Mohbad.

Although the Marlian Records released a statement last weekend pledging its support for the on-going special investigation launched by the Nigeria Police, none of the key representative of the label has appeared for questioning as at the time of filing this report. It is understood that some of the top acts of the music label such as Zinoleskky has embarked on a music tour in the US, reports say that his scheduled shows had been cancelled.

Pockets of tributes by fans and protests have commenced around the world. In Berlin, fans were seen on social media celebrating the music of Mohbad while calling for justice to prevail. Many fans had confessed that they only listened to Mohbad’s music in passing without much attention to the ingenuity and wisdom in the songs.

In another development, the mother of another former Marlian Records signee had released audio recordings documenting how her son, DJ Splash had lost his mind while working for the label. She revealed how her son won at a contest organised by DJ Consequence and was discovered by Marlian records.

This discovery was expected to be a watershed for his career in music. However, young DJ Splash became dependent on drugs and completely lost his dream of becoming a super star. There had been no statement to counter the allegation made by DJ Splash’s anguished mother that her son suffers mental illness after being signed by the record label- not before. She was compelled to gain custody of her son after his distress call. She also revealed that he had returned without the equipment he left with and others that he acquired while at the record label.

To get to the root of this developing story, Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo paid a visit to the home of DJ Splash which he shares with his family members. The artist explained his ordeal at the Marlian house and how his request to become a recording artist with the label resulted in a lasting feud.

DJ Splash alleged that he eavesdropped on the plan to have his drink spiked so that he would run mad. Although his explanation was not detailed, he seemed quite coherent in his account of history with the label.

His mother had reportedly taken him to different churches for deliverance and had sought some medical help. She maintained that paucity of funds is one of the greatest challenges of getting good treatment for DJ Splash.

The story has sparked more concerns by netizens as many renewed the call on police to bring the executives of this music label back to the country for questioning. The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, had inaugurated a 13-man Special Investigation Team to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of  Mohbad.

According to reports, the investigation team headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Saheed Kassim, is expected to exhume Mohbad’s body for autopsy as well as conduct toxicology and histology tests on it.

The team was divided into four sub teams to take care of specific areas such as forensic, technical, medical and practical investigations.

“The team will engage in the exhumation, autopsy, visit to the crime scenes, hospitals and past records that might be vital towards establishing the facts in relation to the case on that investigation.

In this regard, we do appreciate that a homicide investigation of this case would be complex and technical. But we draw confidence in the fact that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has assured that he would give whatever support we might need from the state to aid our drive for justice and for a very conclusive and professionally delivered investigation process,” Owohunwa said.
