- Fans demand for Investigation
The fans and associates of Mohbad have continued to express their anger and disappointment over the series of developments that culminated in the death of the KPK hitmaker. Mohbad was said to have died on Tuesday after receiving treatment for an ear infection. However, there has been an outpouring of revelations about the sad life that Mohbad had endured till death.
One of the most disturbing was his sour relationship with his former boss at Marlian Records, Naira Marley. Mohbad who was alleged to be involved in substance abuse was a victim of constant assaults. Although the artist made live streams of some of these, his call for help was not heard by those who have the duty to protect lives and preserve the rights of citizens.
Everywhere in Lagos, commuters, street traders, hairdressers, commercial drivers and newspaper stand hangers-on are discussing this untimely death and speedy burial of Mohbad. The refusal of the family members to delay the burial for an autopsy to be conducted had ignited public outrage online.
Mohbad was buried on Wednesday in Ikorodu, an outskirt of Lagos amidst a mammoth of Ikorodu residents and fans who mourned the sudden loss of the 27-year old singer. A petition written by the deceased in June 2023 to the Nigeria Police demanding for the protection of the lives and property of Mohbad and his family surfaced online. In addition, videos showing attacks on Mohbad had been released online. This has ignited anger and hashtag protests such as #JusticeforMohbad as well as #BanMarlianMusic which has no fewer than 94,000 signatures as at the time of filing this report.
The sad story of Mohbad and Marlian music has opened up conversations on the abusive record label owners and the underdogs of the music industry. Many stories are circulating on social media regarding disgruntled artists and how they suffer in the hands of vindictive record label owners.
Many people know Mohbad’s music but are unfamiliar with his stories of struggle till his death. It has launched more pity and empathy for the artist who repeatedly told his painful story through his songs.
