2026 kicked off with a lot of sad news across the globe. Fatal accidents and sudden deaths characterised the news space and it’s on a sober note that we flip the calendar. The joy of resumption has been overshadowed by sadness and holiday turned horror for many. From the Swiss Resort Fire to the loss of Anthony Joshua’s friends, the pain resonated with everyone because of our shared humanity.
Still, as the days roll by, life continues. To make every one of our days count, we have to develop a positive mindset to be productive. It is against this backdrop that we have identified 10 work ethics that can help you stay productive, no matter what you’re going through.
1. Punctuality: Show up on time, every time. It’s a sign of respect and sets the tone for the day. What about being fashionably late? You can be present at the venue but enter into the room later due to status symbol. But if you are a nine-to-fiver, show up in time or on time. Study what the local culture is. Some appreciate it if you are slightly early and may even reward you for it while some may ask you to wait outside until it’s the exact time. Learn the rules and abide by them accordingly.
2. Accountability: Take ownership of your work and be responsible for your actions.
3. Integrity: Be honest and transparent in all your dealings.
4. Respect: Treat colleagues, clients, and superiors with dignity and respect. Avoid pointing us their errors especially when they haven’t requested you to do so.
5. Initiative: Don’t wait for opportunities, create them. Take the lead and be proactive.
6. Teamwork: Collaboration is key. Be willing to support and work with others.
7. Adaptability: Be open to change and willing to adjust to new situations.
8. Continuous Learning: Stay curious and keep learning. Invest in your growth and development.
9. Time Management: Prioritise tasks, set goals, and manage your time effectively.
10. Positive Attitude: Maintain a positive mindset, even in challenging situations.
