He died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, just hours after the death of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari, was announced.

He ruled Ijebuland for 65 years, becoming one of the longest-serving monarchs in Nigeria’s history. Oba Adetona was a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development, enhancing the cultural heritage of Ijebuland through festivals like Ojude Oba.

His leadership saw Ijebuland undergo significant transformations, including infrastructural growth and economic advancement.

In his tribute, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Oba Adetona as “one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional rulers, who played a key role in fostering national unity and guiding his people through decades of transformation in Ijebuland.”

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun also expressed sadness over the monarch’s death, stating that Oba Adetona left behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria.

“Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was a symbol of unity, wisdom, and development. Under his reign, Ijebuland witnessed unparalleled cultural renaissance, infrastructural growth, and economic advancement.”

“His role in elevating the Ojude Oba festival to global recognition, alongside his enduring commitment to education, health, and tradition, will remain a timeless legacy.”

The Sultan of Sokoto also mourned the passing of Oba Adetona, emphasizing his significant roles as a prominent Yoruba monarch and leader of the Ogun State Muslim Council.

“His leadership has been pivotal not only in his local community but also across the broader spectrum of the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria,” he said.
